Finally, Nailed Down My 40's Skincare Routine

skincare routine for 40's

When I was younger, I used to watch my mom applying Pond's night cream before bed. Her skincare routine was straightforward - after a shower, she'd apply body lotion, baby powder, and then Pond's. That's it. She maintains a healthy diet and stays active. Even in her 80s, she continues to keep her skin quite well.

As I've aged, I've become more aware of the challenges my skin faces. With the influx of skincare commercials promoting various products for different concerns, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. I've experimented with skincare products (lots!) over the years in search of solutions. Now in my 40s, prioritizing my health, including skincare, has become essential. Managing dry, sensitive skin feels like a part-time job. Fortunately, after much trial and error, I've found my 40's skincare routine.

Here are some factors that influence my Skincare routine:

Skin type: I have VERY dry and sensitive skin.

Skin concerns: Aging, allergies, dehydration, and whiteheads around the nose.

Climate: Living in Las Vegas was a whole other level. Between the desert climate, the water, indoor heating and cooling, my skin was constantly thirsty. Now that I'm back in Nashville, my skin's happier – the weather's definitely friendlier.

Lifestyle factors: Improving this is crucial. This includes focusing on exercise, ensuring sufficient sleep, and effectively managing stress. I can honestly say I'm not too bad with my diet.

Here's what's been my saving grace. Now, fair warning, what works for me might not work for everyone:

Drink lots of water – I can't stress enough how important hydration is

Short showers, I try to avoid hot showers.

✅Treat myself to oil-infused baths whenever I can.

I drink smoothies regularly – all-natural, no added sugar, just pure fruity goodness. I love fruits! I grew up enjoying fresh fruits with every meal. My smoothie rotation includes berries, bananas, mangoes, or pineapple. Occasionally, I'll throw in some ginger, kale or peanut butter for extra flavor and nutrients.

Skincare Products

Here are my go-tos. I switch them up with the changing seasons.

1. Allies of Skin I'm currently using their award-winning Molecular Silk Amino Hydrating Cleanser, the Peptides & Antioxidants Firming Daily Treatment for daytime, and the Retinal & Peptides Repair Night Cream at night. The cleanser has a gentle chemical scent, which is worth noting. However, it's not a deal-breaker for me. Been using this set for a few months. So far, so good. My skin feels smoother, looks healthier, and the wrinkles are less noticeable.

2. First Aid Beauty

The Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration Moisturizer is one of my favorites. It's a fantastic product and worth the price. I rely on it during the winter months when my skin becomes exceptionally dry. I always have this cream in my arsenal.

3. Beekman 1802

The Dewy Eyed Illuminating Eye Serum is lightweight, feels good on my skin, and instantly hydrates. I use it in the morning and night time. It's a great addition tom routine.

From the website:

It is a highly concentrated, clinically proven eye serum. A blend of silk tree extract, goat milk prebiotic, and powerful botanical extracts quickly absorbs into skin for age-defying revitalization that illuminates eyes while helping to fight the appearance of puffiness and dark circles.

4. COSRX

COSRX has become a favorite of mine! I always recommend their products and shared them as gifts, especially the All About Snail Travel Set. I've invested in the full-sized versions. Naturally, when I mention them to clients, friends, and family, their first response is often, "Snail?" and I find myself elaborating on the benefits.

According to Mayo Clinic, "Snails can produce different types of mucin for different purposes... It contains antioxidants that may help reduce signs of aging like wrinkles, uneven skin tone and sagging. Studies indicate that snail mucin helps with skin regeneration and protects against damaging free radicals."

My initial encounter with COSRX was through their kit, and I was thoroughly impressed! Believe it or not, my skin felt noticeably smoother within just a few days. However, when I bought the full-size products, I didn't experience the same results. Perhaps I was more diligent with my skincare routine when using the kit, but I can't say for sure. I know "It's not you, it's me." If I were to use COSRX, I'd go for the kit once more. The kit used to cost $25, but now it's priced at $30. Fortunately, they frequently offer deals, so I'm happy with that.

5. Aveeno

I've been using Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing for a while now. It's fast absorbing, provides instant itch relief without feeling greasy on my skin. I use it all year long. It's been allergy tested and is formulated for sensitive skin.

6. Lubriderm

While living in Las Vegas, nights were the worst, especially when my back decided to itch in those hard-to-reach spots. Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion has been a lifesaver for my dry skin, particularly alleviating itching. Just like Aveeno, it's provides instant relief.

7. Makeup Eraser

I used to invest heavily in makeup wipes, cleansers, oil, cotton pads, and makeup pads. But not anymore. You can erase makeup with just water including waterproof. One side cleans and the other side exfloriates. It's earth-friendly, affordable, and they have cute designs. I have 2 Nightmare before Christmas sets that I got from a BOGO deal! Love it! I'll create a separate review for Makeup Eraser.

8. Face Mask and Nose strips

I make a habit of using face masks regularly, particularly when my face experiences rashes due to allergies. They effectively soothe and moisturize my skin. I tend to develop whiteheads around my nose, and my preferred method for dealing with them is using nose strips rather than pricking. Occasionally, I'll steam my face beforehand to open up the pores before applying the strip. Afterward, I rinse my face with cold water to help tighten the pores. Don't overdo it. I learned the hard way. Do it once every 2 weeks.

I have confidence in skincare products from Korea and Japan. Their dedication to skincare is no joke, and their products consistently deliver excellent results.
